Between 1900 and 1960, the railways of the Caerwyn Isles continued to evolve as new demands brought fresh routes to parts of the islands the Victorian railway builders had never reached. Expansion into northern Glynoch and southern and central Rathmor was driven increasingly by strategic and industrial needs, with new lines constructed to serve Ministry of Defence facilities, reservoir and dam projects, and the heavy traffic associated with their construction and operation. Older companies and routes were steadily consolidated, while stronger locomotives and improved infrastructure were introduced to handle ever-heavier trains. By 1960, the railway had become far more than a collection of local lines — it was a vital part of the islands’ industrial, military and everyday life.

NOTE: Work in progress. As each railway company has a dedicated page it will be linked to from here. Keep up to date with our progress documenting the railways of Glynoch and Rathmor by joining our newsletter.
