Before 1860, the railways of the Caerwyn Isles were still very much in their infancy. These were the days of crude plateways, horse-drawn tramways and small industrial lines, built not to carry passengers across the islands but simply to move slate, stone, minerals and agricultural produce from where they were found to the nearest harbour, works or market. From the early plateway at Yeyn Keveren to the molasses tramways around Porthelan and the first estate railways appearing on Sorcha, these modest beginnings would sow the seeds of something much greater. Few could have imagined that these scattered little lines would eventually evolve into the extensive railway network of the Caerwyn Isles.
