Between 1880 and 1900, the railways of the Caerwyn Isles entered an age of expansion and consolidation. Independent lines were extended, absorbed and combined into larger companies, while ambitious new routes filled the gaps between once-isolated systems. Great engineering projects carried the railway across deep valleys, through mountains and, most importantly, across the waters separating the islands, allowing passengers and freight to travel farther than ever before without changing to ships. Competition remained fierce, but an increasingly interconnected network was emerging. By the end of the century, the scattered railways of the pioneering years were beginning to resemble one great island railway system.

NOTE: Work in progress. As each railway company has a dedicated page it will be linked to from here. Keep up to date with our progress documenting the railways of Glynoch and Rathmor by joining our newsletter.
