Industries

Industry has shaped both the landscape and the railways of the Caerwyn Isles for almost two centuries. From slate and metal mines high in the mountains and peat workings across the moors, to woollen mills, forestry, glassmaking and the rather unusual molasses workings of Porthelan, almost every corner of the islands has had something to produce — and something that needed moving. Branch lines crept into remote valleys, harbours expanded, tramways became railways and entire communities grew around the industries they served. Discover the businesses, quarries, mines, mills and occasionally rather questionable enterprises that helped turn a collection of isolated island railways into the sprawling network of the Glynoch & Rathmor Railway.
